HISTORY
The Scituate Police Department was made a permanent force on July 9, 1970,
by Town Council ordinance. It was authorized a Chief, Deputy Chief, a Captain, a
Lieutenant, three Sergeants and as many Patrolmen as the Council should from time to
time determine necessary.
The present table of organization includes a Chief, one
Captain, one
Lieutenant, five Sergeants and ten Patrol Officers. Additionally, there are six full
time civilian employees, including a secretary, a computer/records manager, and four
dispatchers, who are also responsible for fire dispatch. Future plans for staffing
within the department include a community affairs officer and a detective.
Records show that since 1923 six men have served as Chief of Police in the
town. Prior to that time police services were handled by the Town Sergeant.
